Psicha for Kol Nidrei and Carrying Sefer Torah #1 (South Thornhill YK)

Current bid: $90.00

Opening of the Ark

  • It is very meritorious for one to open the ark and take out the Torah Scrolls that are carried around the congregation, any time the Torah is read, and particularly so on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year.
  • The prayers that are recited at that time, are such that indicate a direct request for mercy from Hashem. The opening of the Ark also arouses the congregation to teshuvah, returning to Hashem.
  • As the awesome and holy day of Yom Kippur begins and the Torah is taken out for the heart-stirring prayer of Kol Nidrei, the congregation kisses the Torahs and in the spirit of Yom Kippur, mentally confesses their sins and asks the Al-mighty for forgiveness.
  • Opening the Ark for the first time on Yom Kippur symbolically opens the Gates of the Heavens for this Yom Kippur, for our prayers to be heard on High for all in attending the services, and more so for the one actually opening the Ark.

Holding the Torah Scrolls

  • As is indicated in the prayer book, the Arizal, one of the greatest masters of Kabbalah, teaches that it is very meritorious to purchase the honor of taking out the first Torah scroll and bringing it to centre of the synagogue, to be held near the one leading the service for the Kol Nidrei, the opening prayer of Yom Kippur.
  • The one who receives this honour, together with the Chazzan and other Torah holder, become the Bais Din, the Jewish court, dispensing forgiveness to the Jewish People. What a meaningful way to start off Yom Kippur, to be part of this righteous Bais Din.
